Biography
I graduated from Calvin College in 1995
with a double major in English and Education and a minor
in P.E. with a coaching emphasis. During college I played
on Calvins nationally ranked tennis team as well.
I began my career as an English teacher at Illiana Christian
High School in the Chicago area and stayed there for 5
years. I then moved back to my hometown of San Jose and
began work as the AP English teacher at Valley Christian
High School. After 5 years of teaching there, I moved
into the high school administration, where I worked for
3 more years. In addition to my teaching and administrative
duties, Ive spent the last 13 years as a coach of
both high school basketball and tennis. As an alumnus
of San Jose Christian, I was excited about the opportunity
to step into the superintendent role here, and I look
forward to helping this school achieve its fullest potential.
Personal Biography
I grew up in San Jose in a family of
four. I have one younger brother who lives in Modesto,
and my parents still live in San Jose. My wife, Betsy,
and I have been married since 2000, and we have a 2 ½
year-old daughter, Juliana. When Im not working,
I enjoy watching and playing sports and spending time
in nature, especially the Lake Tahoe area. I read a great
deal, and I always seem to have two or three books going
at once. I love the movies as well, and Im always
looking for recommendations on good films to see. I am
a member of San Jose Christian Reformed Church where I
serve as chairman of the deacons and a member of the Personnel
and Staffing team.
Christian Philosophy of Education
As Christian educators, we play a powerful
role in the 3-way partnership between church, home, and
school. Our job is to prepare young people for distinction
in all aspects of their livesacademic, social, and
spiritualfor it is in learning and developing these
facets of our being that we enrich our humanity and live
out more fully what it means to be created in the image
of God. As superintendent, I seek to nurture a passion
for learning, stretching, and growing amongst our staff
and our students. I desire for our facilities, our programs,
and our personnel to exhibit the kind of excellence that
bears witness to the greatness of our Creator, and in
doing so functions as a force for redemption and renewal
in this world.
