Band
The band program at San Jose Christian
School is a multi-tiered line up of musical talent.
Fifth Grade band introduces students
to instrument study. Band is optional. Students enter
this band with no prior band experience. Instruments offered
at this level include flute, clarinet, bassoon, alto sax,
trumpet, trombone, baritone, French horn, snare drum,
and orchestra bells. Instruction includes instrument care,
sound production, practice habits, tone production, music
reading, and performance skills. A band score is prepared
for a spring concert performance.
Sixth Grade band provides opportunity
for students to increase instrument skills. Band is optional.
Students without any band experience wishing to join band
in Grade 6 are required to take one year of private instruction
to provide the foundational skills missed in Beginning
Band. Instruments offered at this level include flute,
clarinet, bassoon, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax,
trumpet, trombone, baritone, French horn, tuba, snare
drum, and orchestra bells. Instruction includes scales,
sight reading, music theory, concert etiquette, and performance
skills. Grade 6 Band performs in a winter and spring concert.
In Grades seven and eight, band provides
an avenue for challenge and expression to students who
have already mastered fundamental skills on concert band
instruments. Instruments offered at this level include
flute, clarinet, bassoon, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor
sax, baritone sax, trumpet, trombone, baritone, French
horn, tuba, snare drum, and orchestra bells. Instruction
includes scales, sight reading, music theory, concert
etiquette, and performance skills. Grade 7-8 Band performs
in a winter and spring concert.
Jazz Band provides the highest level
of performance opportunity at San Jose Christian School.
This select group of musicians is chosen on the basis
of each person's musical competence on his or her instrument.
Instruments include alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, trumpet,
trombone, electric guitar, electric bass, piano (advanced),
drum set, and auxiliary percussion. Try outs are required
for Jazz Band and are held in the first two weeks of the
school year. Once students are chosen, rehearsals are
held before school two days per week for the remainder
of the year.
